‘Ecological Explorations’ will offer students unparalleled exposure to the study of ecology in one of the world’s most environmentally-diverse countries. Students will visit awe-inspiring Ecuadorian locations such as the Amazon rainforest, Andes mountains, and Galápagos Islands. Taking students to a range of ecological zones, this study tour will immerse participants in the botany and zoology inherent in the interactions between the regions’ flora and fauna. 

The study tour will begin in Ecuador’s capital city of Quito, perched high in the Andean foothills, for two days of orientation and scientific lectures. Students will then depart for three weeks of fieldwork across the country. The group will first head further up the Andes mountains, above the timberline, to learn about the páramo. This biome is unlike anything expected to exist in the tropics — characterised by cool temperatures and alpine grasslands, bogs and meadows. Next, students will visit El Pahuma Orchid Reserve, a local conservation project protecting 650 hectares of beautiful forest. While there, students will experience one of the world’s most unique ecosystems, the cloud forest, the existence of which is possible only under very specific environmental conditions. Students will then head to the Pacific coast to spend time at the Lalo Loor Dry Forest Reserve where they will encounter a wide range of wildlife including Howler and Capuchin monkeys. Halfway through their time in Ecuador, students will visit the famed Amazon Rainforest. Surrounded by one of the world’s most pristine habitats, students will complete independent research projects at Sani Lodge located deep inside the Ecuadorian Amazon. The group will then visit the Galápagos Islands, home to unique species, both marine and terrestrial. Encounters will include birdwatching for Darwin’s finches, hiking among giant tortoises and snorkelling with endemic marine iguanas. Upon their return to Quito after twenty-four days, students will engage in synthesis of their academic adventure and presentation of their projects before returning home. 

Planned and operated in conjunction with the Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation, Ecological Explorations will allow students to enjoy scientific experiences normally reserved for university students. The trip will incorporate expert-led lectures, guided nature hikes and independent research projects so that students learn not only scientific knowledge but also practical skills. The group will include both Studio Education staff and local Ecuadorian guides contracted through Ceiba. If there is any experience ideal for the budding scientist, this is it.
