While all Studio courses incorporate essay writing as a core component, it is also available as a standalone course. Our Essay Writing course deals with spelling, grammar and structure, to be sure, but in many ways the deeper value of the work lies in students’ exposure to methods of information organization, analysis and refinement.

In this course, students tackle complex subjects that they have likely not been asked to investigate before; teachers introduce an array of primary and secondary sources, historical context, and sets of paradigmatic writings. Students learn to read the unfamiliar with a critical eye and attention to perspective, before turning towards developing their own point of view on the materials and topics at hand. They learn how to collate concepts, refine ambiguities, and develop a point-of-view. Teachers provide close readings and feedback on several drafts along the way, and are there to provide encouragement and direction up to the final oral presentations of students’ original work.

In Essay Writing, students encounter complicated and intriguing questions and learn how to read, interpret, and express themselves in systematic, eloquent ways.
